Both in the literature and practice, every unplanned and unexpected event (case) which causes a negative consequence and cessation of work and which endangers people’s health is defined as an accident. The consequences of the accident may be manifested in the form of: worker injury, the termination of manufacturing process and the destruction of material and natural resources. The risk is any real or potential condition that can cause an accident, that is, the risk is a prerequisite for the accident. The prevention of accidents is achieved by elimination, control and other measures aiming to reduce risk.
Injuries at work refer to body, organic or functional harm that occurs at a workplace or in connection with work. They ensue as a result of disproportion between workers and means of labor, on the one hand, and material conditions of working environment, on the other. Since the main goal of health and safety at work is to protect workers from accidents at work and other health damage, it is necessary to know the causes of accidents and injuries as well as their consequences in order protection could prevent them.
A number of engineering methods deal with the issues related to the analysis of causes and the consequences of errors that affect the quality, reliability, and safety of the work process. Cause-effect diagrams are an effective method commonly used.
